Bill Burke, president of the Los Angeles Marathon and now president of the renamed New Las Vegas Marathon, said the move has been a long work in progress.

"We had been eyeing that territory, believe it or not, for 12 years," Burke said. "We knew from our experiences in other locations that the potential was enormous. We think it can not only become the largest marathon in the world, but become one of the great ones."

Both races began with a spectacular display of pre-dawn fireworks (www.onlytahiti.com) and an energetic live performance by Blue Man Group on the start line. The race further succeeded in its mission to offer more entertainment per mile than any marathon in the world (www.onlytahiti.com) with a 400% increase in entertainment centers over last year. In the last four miles alone, there were ten "Home-Stretch Entertainment Stations" to inspire participants to the finish line, where performers from Mystere by Cirque du Soleil welcomed the finishers.

Dr Burke, President of the Las Vegas Marathon said he expects to succeed, notably because of the host city. "You sense in this town a shift in attitude," he said. "There's a whole new level of excitement that wasn't here last year. That's from the runners traveling here and from the locals, saying they enjoy this event and are excited about it. And I just love that. The electricity around this event didn't have this level of intensity last year."

The excitement begins with the New Las Vegas Marathon Quality of Life Expo at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in December, where more than 200 exhibitors will showcase the latest in health and fitness. In another "Only in Vegas" experience, participants will be directed to world class restaurants offering discounts in a "call your own shot" Carbo Load dinner. At 6:00am on race day, participants will be part of what is undoubtedly the most exciting new event in the world of "destination marathons".

Clark County Championship Will Award Cash Prize To Top Local Runners

If you've been a resident of Clark County, Nevada for the past six months or longer, you have a chance to win a cash prize if you're the first local man or the first local woman to cross the Finish Line.

Local men who expect to finish the race in less than 3 hours and 15 minutes or women who will run it in less that 3:30 are asked to contact Tim Kelly at timothyhkelly @ aol.com by no later than Friday, December 1st at 5:00 p.m. in order to establish eligibility. The Clark County Championship prize purse is being offered by race organizer Devine in support of the local running community.

Plans Announced For Torch Run

The New Las Vegas Marathon's Torch Run will continue as a race tradition honoring police, fire and military personnel. Once again the Torch Run will focus on the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's efforts to establish a college fund for the children of Officer Don Albietz, who lost his life in a tragic bicycling accident. We are looking to put together the World's Largest Collection of Elvis marathon runners. We already have the .2 and we are looking for 26 more Elvi to start the Marathon together on December 10. By popular demand from participants, the 2006 race will also feature runners dressed as showgirls.
